The Missoula Food Bank & Community Center isn’t just a place to get groceries. This fall it’s also running free, hands-on cooking classes.

The food bank says generous donors and volunteer instructors let it offer the classes at no charge. Participants just help clean up afterward, because many hands make light work.

Classes are at the food bank, 1720 Wyoming St. Sign up through each class page on the food bank’s events calendar.

Mon., Nov. 9: Diabetes-friendly seasonal favorites

4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dietitian and intuitive eating counselor Nicole C. teaches fall comfort food built around balanced carbs, satisfying portions and fiber-forward ingredients (details and sign-up).

You don’t need to have diabetes or prediabetes to take it. The recipes are for anyone. The class is geared toward ages 16 and up.

Fri., Nov. 20: Eat our way around the world

11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Part of a new series of classes exploring the world through food. Kids make tortilla soup and fry bread, read stories about the food and do art or activities if time allows (details).

It’s geared toward ages 8 to 13, and an older teen is welcome. Caregivers of children under 10 are asked to stay in the building, and ideally in the room. If you won’t stay in the room, the food bank requires a form.

Mon., Dec. 7: Diabetes-friendly holiday food

4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Nicole returns with a holiday edition: brainstorm healthy ideas and recipes and leave with practical dishes to make for the holidays (details).

Good to know

  • Sign up ahead, and if you can’t make it, remove your name so someone on the waitlist can take your spot.
  • Have special dietary needs? The food bank asks you to let it know.
  • The food bank also hosts FEAST (Food, Education, Advocacy, Support, Together) sessions. Nov. 18, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., is “Civics 101, Part 1” (details).

Need groceries? The food bank’s free Store has no eligibility criteria and asks for no documentation, just a short self-reported intake form. Call (406) 549-0543 for hours.
